The City of Reno will officially dedicate Bluebirds Among Sage, a large-scale exterior painted mural, into its public art collection Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 3 p.m. Media, City of Reno employees, and the public are invited to participate in the celebration on the Reno City Plaza. Free refreshments will be available to the first 150 attendees.

Artist Charly Malpass began painting Bluebirds Among Sage on the City Hall Parking Garage on May 10 and finished her mural on May 19. Malpass’ design covers nearly all of the exterior Parking Garage surface area on the south wall and the southwest corner, with some elements wrapping into Lincoln alleyway. Malpass teamed up with Encore Paint, a company that collects material from hazardous waste centers turning old, discarded paint into new, usable paint for artists. Sustainability has been a major theme in Malpass’ recent projects.

On February 23, 2022, the Reno City Council approved an Agreement to commission Malpass for the City Hall Parking Garage Mural Project in the amount of $70,000 from Room Tax. On January 24, 2022, the Reno Arts and Culture Commission (RACC) approved the recommendation from the Public Art Committee (PAC) to commission Malpass for the project. The RACC identified the City Hall Parking Garage as an ideal location for public art.
